Dogs and Pet Passports

If I take my dog (eric) to spain on holiday I don't need a pet passport.
But if I want to bring him back to the UK (without Quarantine) I do.
Is this correct?

You'll need a pet passport to get back into the country - I think you're ok to get out. It's easy to sort but the initial vaccinations take c.6 months.
