does anyone have any suggestions please, when we meet other dogs when I take monty for a walk he starts to bark like mad and pulls on his lead to try and get to them, when he gets by the dogs he fine, wags his tail and wants to play he's not aggressive but puts other dogs and their owners off because of his constant barking,I've tried everything I can think of i.e. turning him around and going the opposite direction, ignoring him and just carry on walking, nothing stops him he just keeps on barking and pulling , its the only thing that i can say is wrong with a otherwise perfect little dog, the only reason i can think why hes like this, is, I didnt get him until he was 2years old upto then he had been kept in a kitchen with his sister who constanly bullied him and as he didnt go out i don't think he is very socialised. any help or suggestions would be very welcome

Hi. My dog doesn't bark, but strains to get to other dogs when we're out walking too. If he's off the lead, he shoots off to see them, and jumps all over their owners too. It's embarrassing if they think he's going to attack or if he gets muddy feet on their clothes. I've stopped letting him off the lead if I see another dog now, so I know how you feel.
I started using a rolled up newspaper with the ends frayed - I would shake it near his head if he barked or jumped or did anything I didn't like. It just startled him enough to get his attention and sometimes worked. The problem is getting other people to tell him off/ ignore him I find. perhaps we need to seek professional help you and I and our boys?

Hi, my spaniel used to be a nightmare to take out, the best description I can think of is "Tigger on speed" so I looked into dog training in my area and decided on "clicker training" It just uses a clicker and the reward system. Your dog is not yanked about on a choker chain or hurt in any way, I found it trained her beautifully without breaking her spirit or loosing her character. I'm sure if you ask at your local vets they should be able to point you in the right direction of a course near you or just search on the internet that's how I found one near me.
In the mean time have a look at this http://www.dogclub.co.uk/advice/clickertraining.php It may help

hi
thank you for your suggestions.your'e right about getting people to ignore him, a man who walks his westie around the time we're out says hello to monty then just totaly ignores him and the 2 dogs sit together quitely like old friends. the problem is getting other people to do the same they think because hes small they can make a fuss of him which really doesn't help, I'm finding that now instead of trying to keep him away from other dogs, I let him get close to them, and he doe's seem to be improving slowly.

dexter is the same as well ...when we go out he will pull and then lay on the ground stalking it till the dog gets near ....he may be like this as from a young age when out walking most dogs barked at him i think because he looked so diffrent from other dog's
he is not like it with all dog's just most ...but i have now found out that if i carry a few small treats with me when a dog is in sight and i show him a treat he tend's to ignore them ..then get's rewarded ...so far so good
all the best
