My puppy went through the same stage and I have to say that you just have to live through it and they settle in the end. Ours cried for a while, then tried barking and then scratching the door. If we went down to see him he'd quiet for a bit, but then start up again. We just put the pillow over our heads and ignored him for a few nights and he settled. I think it's a bit like children - they need a bedtime routine. I now put him in his bed, stroke him, speak in a low, calm voice, show him that he has fresh water, turn off the lights, shut the door and leg it! Most nights he doesn't cry or bark now. Good luck with it - it breaks your heart though!

Do you have a crate? If not I would think about getting one as my labrador has had one from the start and since the 3rd night he has slept through.

I brought my 9 week old Flat coated Retriever puppy home on Saturday and am having real problems settling her at night - I am trying to get her used to sleeping in her crate in the kitchen. For the last 4 nights, she has barked non-stop, and then is really tired all the next day. Is it normal for the crying/barking to go on this long? How long should I expect it? Everything I've read talks about 2 or 3 nights - but I think she is particularly sensitive.
I would like to bring her crate to my bedroom, but it is far too large to be moved and I could not possibly get it up the stairs. I am very reluctant to let her sleep in my room without it, as I prefer the dog to not go upstairs at all (to protect our hamsters and my kid's toys that are taking refuge there). Also, I do not want her to wee on my bedroom carpet - a crate can be cleaned.
Should I persevere or am I being cruel? I'm not sure how many nights of this distress is normal.
She gets lots of love, attention and play during the day.
Ideas anyone?

Been trying to crate train my Dall, he's 9 weeks old, just barks and barks till he gets back out. He has all his meals ect in the crate fine but close that door and all hell is let lose. At the mo I have his bed in my room and he settles there for a good six hours while we sleep but its not ideal.
Any advice other than letting him bark his heart out ?
