Runners keen to join next years Virgin London Marathon are being urged to apply for a PDSA ‘gold bond’ place.

The UK’s leading veterinary charity has a limited number of guaranteed places for the 2010 marathon.

Animal lovers who can ensure they will raise a minimum sponsorship of £1,500 for sick and injured pets are encouraged to apply. The deadline for applications is Monday, 6 July.

PDSA vet Holly Mitchell, who ran the marathon for the first time in April, said, “I’m very proud that my first marathon raised funds for such a worthy cause as PDSA. It was an amazing experience and I’d encourage anyone thinking about it to give it a go.

“You don’t have to be a fitness fanatic to run a marathon, although you do have to be reasonably serious about the training. I got myself really fit and healthy and the feeling of crossing the finish line was well worth the effort! Running for a charity was a great way to keep motivated and got me through the final mile.”

Last year the PDSA London Marathon team raised an incredible £150,000 for pets in need of vets. As a member of the team, runners receive a PDSA running vest and regular newsletters, as well as fitness advice and training tips. PDSA also offers their runners an exclusive ‘chill out’ area after the race, where you will be fed and watered after your marathon mission.

PDSA Fundraising Manager, Brenda Alexander says, “If you’ve always dreamed of taking part in the London Marathon then PDSA can give you that chance. Our gold bond places will be snapped up fast and we want to allocate them to people who are passionate about running for PDSA and raising as much as they can for poorly pets.

“The race is the UK’s largest fundraising event and we are very proud of the PDSA runners for taking part. So, why not step up and take on the challenge for PDSA and apply for a place today?”

Funds raised will help PDSA provide free veterinary treatment to sick and injured pets belonging to people in need. Over 1.8 million treatments will be carried out this year, at a cost of £50 million. PDSA relies on the generosity and goodwill of the public to fund its services.
