Heatstroke

Comments (0)

Cats do not sweat like humans but have to lose heat by panting if overheated. If they pant excessively they easily become dehydrated and collapse. The most common cause of heatstroke is when a pet is left in a car on a summer's day. Even if the car is parked in the shade, the sun moves very fast and the car may become like an oven and it will literally cook your pet.

  • never leave your cat in the car unattended
  • leaving the windows open is not enough as your pet will still become overheated

Treatment

Your pet's temperature will escalate and if it gets too high it will die. Cool it down by wrapping it in wet towels. Put it in the shade and apply ice cubes to the gums. Encourage it to drink. Leave a fan nearby and put lots of ice cubes in a bowl of cold water near the fan to help cool the surrounding air.
