My dog has a scab that keeps gettting knocked off and therefore will not heal. What can I do?

My short-haired dog has had a chunk of his coat ripped out, through his choke chain nipping when he pulls. How can I treat his skin naturally to help him? The scab keeps getting knocked off and the missing chunk of hair looks bigger still.

Answer:

Unfortunately, the hair round your dog’s neck is unlikely to grow back if friction from his choke chain continues. As long as there is no inflammation or bacterial infection associated with this hair loss, you can either continue with the choke chain and accept the bald area, or change to a Halti Collar. This will fit round the head of your dog, rather than his neck. If inflammation or ulcerated areas are present, as suggested by your mention of scabs, then an examination by your vet would be indicated, as a course of antibiotics may need to be prescribed.
