Question:

My German shepherd, Zena, has just been diagnosed with kidney disease. Can you recommend any home-made diets that I could feed her?

Answer:

Diets low in phosphorous and protein have been shown to slow the progression of kidney disease in our animal patients, and are an important part of the management of kidney failure in dogs and cats. It is very difficult to provide a suitable diet for such a pet using home-cooked ingredients and it is not recommended. A much better alternative for Zena is to feed her a ready-made prescription diet for dogs with kidney disease. This will provide her with all of her dietary requirements while helping to preserve her kidney functions.
