Question:
My dog, Bella, had a litter of puppies six weeks ago and she is still bleeding slightly. Is this normal and, if so, for how long is the bleeding likely to continue?
Answer:
The majority of bitches will have a vaginal discharge for up to three weeks after whelping, while the uterus returns to its normal state. More prolonged discharge may indicate that the sites of placental attachment on the lining of the uterus have not regressed as normal. Your vet will need to carefully monitor Bella for the development of anaemia while the discharge settles down.
