Question:

My cat has been ill for about four weeks. First with watery eyes, wax in the ears and sneezing – now he is vomiting and has slight diarrhoea. He has also lost his appetite and is tired and uninterested in what is going on. I have taken him to the vet who did tests, took an X-ray and gave my cat antibiotics, but I was told that the tests didn’t show anything serious. Please could you let me know if you have any ideas as to what is wrong with my cat?

Answer:

Unfortunately, without seeing your cat, I would not be able to give you a diagnosis on the symptoms you describe. However, as he has not responded to antibiotics, it is more likely that the problem is either as a result of a viral infection or possibly a problem with your cat’s immune system. It is very important to try to get him to eat, to enable him to keep his strength up. Your vet will be able to prescribe a convalescent diet that is very palatable, and would certainly help, if you could get him to eat it. Has your cat been vaccinated? If not, it may be that he has been exposed to one of the viral diseases that can be vaccinated against. Unfortunately, if this is the cause of the problem, it could be very serious. As he is not getting better, you should take him back to be seen by your vet again. Alternatively, remember that you can always request a referral to any vet for a second opinion. But do not leave it too long, as the sooner there is a diagnosis, the better.
