What could be causing my bitch to have such dry skin?

Question:

My bitch has very delicate skin and I have to use Epi-soothe shampoo when she has a bath, to stop her having rashes. To look at her she seems in perfect health, admired by most people. Very energetic for her age, loves playing with balls and is the right weight for her size. Her fur is in good condition, fine & thick with a slight sheen. Her teeth are good. She has very good eyesight and hearing and she has walks of at least one to two miles a day. The vets are stumped. I have also tried keeping her off all carpets in case of an allergy. I have yet to try primrose oil - I was told this sometimes works. It helps by sticking to chicken, Wafol 21, 1 cupful of greens & carrots and 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil for her meals each day.

Answer:

Dry skin can be caused by a number of different skin problems. Skin infections, both bacterial and fungal, parasites such as fleas or mites, allergies and hormonal diseases are all potential causes. Minor irritations may benefit from shampoo treatments, as you describe, and essential fatty acid (primrose oil or fish oil) supplements can help in the long-term. If your dog's skin irritation responds to a change in diet, that could indicate a possible food allergy. Feeding her a novel diet, e.g. boiled turkey and potato, for ten to twelve weeks will improve her skin if a food allergy is the underlying cause.
