Question:
I have just got my dog from a man who neglected him. Charlie is a five month old Staffs bull terrier of a red colour, and seems thin for his age. Can you tell me which foods would be best to fill him out, and also what kind of exercise would be best to keep him fit?
Answer:
A five-month-old dog should still be on puppy food. Puppy food is higher in protein and calories and will fulfil all of your dog's nutritional needs. Charlie should stay on a puppy diet until he is at least six months old, and then he should move onto a 'junior' diet until he is a year old. Only then should you switch him to an adult food. Make sure you are feeding him a balanced diet of dog food and not human food. harlie should also be wormed and treated for fleas. At his age, vigorous exercise is not a good idea because the ends of his bones are still soft and could be damaged. A few leisurely walks per day is plenty. When Charlie is about a year old, you can move onto running with him. Many Staffies enjoy running. f a good diet and worm and flea treatment (from a vet, not a supermarket or pet store) doesn't get Charlie into shape, have your vet investigate the problem more thoroughly.
