Question:
Is it alright to add a small amount of chicken to my dog's food? He is fed on a complete dry food, and I add no more than 1oz of chicken.
Answer:
The addition of 1oz of chicken to your dog's complete dog food should not be a problem. Chicken is high in protein, so care must be taken when it, or any other extra, is added to a dog's diet, especially if it's a growing poppy or an elderly dog. Overly nutritious diets have been thought to contribute to cartilage problems in puppies. In older dogs, kidney disease becomes more likely - moderate or low protein levels are required in their diet. You should also be careful that your dog doesn't become too used to the chicken, as this will make him less inclined to eat the complete dog food.
