Question:
My Bulldog, Jenny, has started to experience extensive problems with her skin, chiefly around her muzzle - in her creases. I apply Fuciderm on a egular basis, which it clears it up within 48 hours, but then it recurs a few days later. She also gets inflamed lumps between her toes. What is causing his? She's nearly eight and has never experienced skin problems before. She has had several courses of antibiotics without success, and an nti-bacterial shampoo, but nothing seems to work long term. Any advice would be gratefully received.
Answer:
Unfortunately Bulldogs are prone to skin disease, especially around the creases of the face and the paws. The infection associated with the creases is called a Skin Fold Pyoderma. It is often treated surgically by performing a type of 'face lift' to remove the skin folds. Antibiotics will help treat the condition, but this often produces only a temporary improvement. The paws can be more difficult to treat and may require long-term courses of antibiotics, often for several months at a time. Topical treatment with antibiotic shampoos on the paws is often very helpful.

I also own a bulldog and think suggesting surgery is not the first option to try. Bulldogs need at least a daily cleaning of his/her folds with a non-perfumed wet wipe and dried thereafter. We find sudocrem (used for babies) is the best product on the market. Our bully was quite bad when we got him, but now a weekly facial and creaming is all he needs to control it.
