Question:
Dusty is a rescue dog, he is approximately eight years old and I have had him for four and a half years. In March this year he had a bladder infection, which cleared up with antibiotics, but since then he has been incontinent. He wets his bed every night and leaks on the carpets when he is resting. He is sometimes leaking as he walks around. He has had numerous tests and X-rays, which have shown nothing untoward. Have you any suggestions please?
Answer:
Urinary incontinence can be caused by a number of different medical conditions, broadly based upon problems with the bladder, prostate (in the male) and urethra; or with the nervous control of the bladder itself. training to urinate, increased frequency of urination or blood in the urine may all indicate infection. Weakness in the hind limbs or faecal incontinence may point to problems with nerve control. Some types of incontinence in older animals may respond to hormone therapy. In the absence of any treatable cause, then attention to cleanliness to prevent sore skin from urine scald is paramount.

well if you think about it in the human contect he is 56 years old. Many humans are beginning to have muscular problems at this age and the bladder is controlled by muscles. Its probably a case of that when he had his infection it may have weakened some of the muscles. they may return in time but if they dont then its just a case of managing it. I did think the vet had some medication that can help. You may have to get him some "dog pants" for when he is inside.
