I have recently put my 8 year old Labrador on glucosamine as whilst she is not showing any signs of joint problems I want to prevent her doing so. I've done quite a bit of online research on the benefits and it seems that the veterinary community agree that glucosamine does have genuinely beneficial effects i.e. it's not just 'quack' science! The problem I have is nowhere can I find recommendations as to how much of the active ingredient I should be aiming to give her, other than on the products themselves, and these vary by a factor of four or more. Does anybody have any evidenced guidelines as to the correct dosage? Apart from the cost, I'm not convinced that giving the highest dose possible is the best thing to do.

I have no evidence but if it were me and the dog was showing no signs of joint problems I'd give it either a half dose or the dosage for a smaller dog. I agree with you that the full dose. I'm not convinced either that giving the highest dose possible until necessary would be beneficial. I always used to give my old dog (who did have joint pains in old age) oil of evening primrose of cod liver oil in his food. I found that helped too.
Sorry I cant be of more help

Hi there i thought i would just say i to put a drop of normal cod liver oil in my dogs food each evening and it works well for one of my dogs who has no problems,my other dog injured a ligament and was struggling when out walking he wouldnt run about as much. The vet has put him on something called mobility support, its made of natural products and its soft and breakable,so he thinks hes getting a treat. Whitin 5 days i saw a difference hes now bounding about again.Im sure you should be able to contact the nurse at your vets to disscuss this with her.
I hope you find a solution.
