We often take our dog to the pub with us and last night while a lady was paying him attention her little boy creaped up behind her and our dog (Buster) Barked at him. The little boy had chewing gum in his mouth and coins in his hand. Can anyone give any reason to why he barked? We have had Buster for four weeks now and his never done this before.

Buster could have barked for a nunber of reasons,it could have simply been because the boy creaped up and startled him.Buster could also have barked because he felt the need to protect you and the lady who was showing him affection.
Its hard to say exactly what it could be as you havent stated his age,if buster is a older dog, do you know is history?.Buster might have had a bad experience with children,it could have been the sound of the coins in his hands.
Sometimes when you get older dogs they dont show any behaviour traits for a number of weeks. The best thing to do is try and take him in to every situation and meet lots of different people so it wont cause a potential behaviour problem in the future.
Im sorry i couldnt be of more help.

I like to take my young Labrador to the pub too. As yet I have not had the courage to take him in, he is 10 months old, so I tie him up outside, go in and get my drink, and then we share a bag of crisps whilst i enjoy my beer in the pub garden.
The trouble is he barks and cries loudly whilst i am getting the beer.
Any suggestions out there how I can stop him? It is the only time he cries when left.

Your dog is obviously suffering from separation anxiety. I dont know if you leave the dog alone normally but its just a question training.
Try tying the dog up at home and leaving her for a few minutes, return with a dog treat and praise her. She will grow out of this, mine used to do the same but is OK now. Its just a question of perseverence.
I wouldn't give my dog crisps either, just give her normal non human treats.

thanks.
ben is fine left at home or in the car. seperates well, will leave me and go off with other members of family etc if I say ok.
I think it is more a dislike of being tethered. i tried tying him to a tree in the garden and sat by him thinking to treat him when he sat quiet, but he would not settle even when I spoke to him or stroked him.

Good idea but all local pubs serve food so ben is not welcome. he is getting better. I have takn to taking my wife as well. She sits putside and calms Ben. This is also helping my marriage as we now spend more time together talking!!!!
