Hi everyone,
I got back yesterday from a trip to Romania and found the experience of seeing the dogs on the streets, both in Bucharest and in the rural villages, quite disturbing. In fact, it had me in tears!
My partner and I were riding through the villages about 40 miles from Cluj and were joined by a stray dog who followed us for 2 days. He was very timid, but once he got confident he was as loving and affectionate as any dog I have ever met. However on return to the village were we started, I tried to find a family to look after him but could find no one. It was heart breaking to leave him, but I could not bring him with me due to quarantine regulations etc.
I would like to know if anyone is aware of any charity running out there to improve conditions for dogs?
Please let me know.

Hi Holly
I've found this charity, based in Romania - the Romanian League In Defense of Animals. They have a shelter and you can even go out there to spend a 'holiday' to help with the dogs. There's lots of information on their website - http://www.rolda.org/.
You might also look at WSPA - the World Society for the Protection of Animals - at http://wspa.org.uk. I don't think they have any specific Romanian projects but they have a lot to protect stray dogs.

Hello, Holly,
I thought you might be interested to know that the Wood Green Animal Shelter at Godmanchester in Cambridgeshire has recently taken in several stray dogs from Romania. They have all been vaccinated, neutered and microchipped and are now looking for new homes.
We have re-homed a darling little one called Funny. She is a sandy-tan colour and looks like a cross between a yellow labrador and a whippet, with possibly a touch of bull terrier! She was very nervous when we brought her home ten days ago, but she has settled in well with our old dog, Holly (!) and is as gentle and loving a companion as you could wish for. That is, unless you are a young child, cyclist, jogger, cat, rabbit, squirrel, pheasant, chicken.......we have quite a bit of training to do before we can let her off the lead!
One out of the many thousands doesn't make much difference, I suppose, but I can assure you this one at least has found a loving and secure home.
