Pet Insurance
Protecting the health and wellbeing of your pet is important. After all, they’re part of the family. And the last thing you want if your dog is injured or becomes ill is to be worrying about the cost of treatment.
Obviously, your choice of pet insurance should cover you against the cost of unexpected vet’s bills.
What is covered?
Pet Insurance will help cover the cost of unexpected accidents and illnesses, most Pet Insurance providers will offer cover for the following:
Veterinary fees cover
There are 3 basic types of vet fees insurance in the market place.
- 12 month policy –a monetary limit for each illness and injury where cover for treatment stops after 12 months
- Cover for life- an annual limit for all treatment reinstated each time the policy is renewed.
- Maximum benefit – a monetary limit for each illness and injury with no time limit
Veterinary fees cover will cover the cost of x-rays, consultations, surgery and medication
On-going conditions (like heart problems, epilepsy, skin conditions, diabetes or arthritis) require treatment over many years rather than 2 or 3 consultations. It is important to make sure that your policy will provide cover for ongoing conditions year after year.
Alternative therapies
Most policies will cover you for alternative therapies, like homeopathy, acupuncture, physiotherapy or herbal medicine. The amount you can claim depends on the type of policy you have. Some will have a separate (usually lower) benefit in addition to the benefit for conventional vets’ fees. Others will allow you to use your entire vet fee benefit for alternative treatments.
- Advertising & Reward for lost or stolen pets
- Boarding Kennel & Cattery Fees if pet owner is hospitalised
- A very useful benefit on the majority of policies provides cover for Kennel or Cattery costs if you are hospitalised for any reason and you do not have anyone to look after your pet for you.
- Third party Liability If the pet causes accidental injury, damage or loss to person or property
- Maximum Age Limits
- As a pet becomes older, it’s increasingly more important to have sufficient insurance cover, as the risk of developing conditions such as arthritis, kidney and heart disease becomes more likely. Some insurance providers put a age limit on taking insurance out, this ca be from as young as 6 years old.
- Exclusions
These are the restrictions to your cover. No insurance policy will be able to cover you for everything, so you will need to make sure you are fully aware of what you cannot claim for.
The areas Pet Insurance companies will not cover are any pre existing conditions and the routine treatments like spaying or castration (neutering) unless on medical grounds and vaccinations.
Do I need Pet Insurance?
As there is no NHS for pets it makes sense to have Pet Insurance, it is a very good way to budget for those unexpected bills. It also ensures peace of mind, and ensures the best of treatment is available without the financial worry.
