Question:
A friend has informed me that I shouldn't give my six-year-old Border terrier bitch cod-liver oil capsules in the summer, as they make dogs retain heat. Is this true? Do you think I should resume giving them to her in the autumn?
Answer:
No, it is certainly not true that cod-liver oil makes dogs retain heat. If you wish to give her cod-liver oil capsules there should no problem with that, as long as you do not give her too much. She should have the equivalent of one teaspoonful per 10Kg of body weight, daily. It is probably not necessary to give her cod-liver oil just as a supplement or to help her coat condition, if she is on a complete proprietary pet food from a well-known manufacturer.
