Question:
I have heard that Cystaid may help cats that suffer from cystitis. Could you tell me what the drug does, and if there are any known side effects?
Answer:
I am not familiar with the drug Cystaid., but I suspect it is a type of supplement. The best way to try to prevent bouts of cystitis from continually recurring is to try to change the environment within the bladder, to prevent crystals from settling out from the urine. Once the crystals have settled out, they irritate the lining of the bladder, causing cystitis. There are diets available that change the acidity of urine, and change the solubility of the minerals within the urine, so that they do not settle out and produce crystals. These prescription-only diets are complete diets and can be fed continually; they work well and have been a real help with the treatment of this painful condition. It's not the whole story, however, and recent work has shown that bouts of cystitis in cats can be stress-related, and that mild doses of antidepressant drugs are very helpful. You should ask your vet about this.

My dog as just recently been put on cystaid by our vet, she first presented the symptoms of cystitis which normal antibiotics wouldnt shift. She was then scanned and it showed some inflammation of the bladder, so they operated on her and luckly found nothing present not even crystals so she was put on another course of antiboitics and cystaid which the vet described as a more concentrated course of antibiotics which are especially for the bladder, shes on a months course and so far so good.
