Question:

How do I stop my dog from chewing when I go out?

Answer:

Dogs chew when left for a number of different reasons. Many dogs chew because they are bored, having been left too long with too little to do. More exercise and stimulation is needed when the owner is home, and when the owner goes out more things need to be left out for the dog to do. Many dogs chew because they are lonely. They often chew around doors and windows trying to get out. Or they may be noisy to try to get their owners back. These dogs need to be gradually desensitised to being left, starting with short absences and gradually increasing.
Some dogs may be afraid of things outside or inside the house. They may try to chew things that smell of the owner or may try to hide away in dark corners. These dogs need to be made to feel more secure and desensitised to whatever frightens them.
