Question:

My dog sometimes shakes and can't move for a few seconds. He then seems fine, but will often lose control of his bladder and bowels and will be sick. Then he's then again. Any ideas? He's been to the vet but he's always 'normal' when we get there.

Answer:

The symptoms you describe could be caused by a seizure or fit. Seizures can be very severe with collapse, paddling movements of the limbs, salivation, urination and defecation, or they can be more subtle. Seizures can be caused by metabolic problems, poisons, diseases of the brain or can be spontaneous without cause - the term for this spontaneous seizuring is epilepsy. Epilepsy can be managed, but not cured, by medications to reduce the frequency of the seizures. If you have a camcorder, it may be possible to record the episodes exhibited by your dog to show to your vet who may then be able to take things further.

My sheepdog has just started having regular seizures, always during mealtimes. As he's a bit manic at best, hates the car, and I can't imagine how a vet would ever examine him as he wouldn't stay still, I have just bought a magnetic collar which is advertised as helping with, and even curing epileptic fits. I have to consider his brother and my other dog as well when he has these fits, so I'm praying it works. I'll let you all know how I get on with it. Also found a herbal remedy. I'm not overkeen on medication, not for myself, nor for my dogs. Also can't rule out that it's caused by the application of the spot -on type of flea treatment. So will use a natural one if he fits again. Has anyone else experienced this and maybe a link to routine treatments?

My puppy has this I believe. Well, I guess this explains a lot. Still, it makes me sad and wanna cry when it happens to her. I havent considered medication, I guess I will ask my vet...

Today my Labrador Eddie suddenly started to shake is head violently and out of control, and I managed to take a recording of it with my camera. I took him straight to the vets, and she has given him some antibiotics and steroids, and also a blood test to check for any diseases or problems with his liver/kidneys. She also advised he may need a CatScan if nothing shows up.

In case of a severe attack, she has also provided me with some rectal medication to sedate him if it is more pronounced as described above, and is more than 10 minutes.

I am worried sick, and also distressed as it looks so awful. I do believe these are mini mals, and hopefully we can get them under control with medication. Fingers crossed it is nothing too serious.

I had a dog and it had epilepsy and as described in article, it was fine on medication, it took a while to get the correct dose and it still had the odd one.
