Question:

I have three dogs. I have noticed that one of my dogs is pulling out the fur on her front leg. Is this due to stress? Is she perhaps being bullied by one of the other dogs?

Answer:

Acral lick dermatitis is the term given to a specific focal bacterial infection of the skin which is normally found on the forelimbs of affected dogs. The area becomes secondarily infected and is in part caused by boredom, rather than stress. Extended courses of antibiotics and even surgery to remove the affected area of skin can be attempted, but recurrence is common. Alternatively, skin parasites such as fleas or mites, or allergies could cause the symptoms you describe. You will need to visit your veterinary surgery to obtain a diagnosis.
