School Children Help Cats And Dogs At Christmas

The UK’s largest cat and dog welfare charities, Cats Protection and Dogs Trust, are pleased to announce the winners of their recent ‘Design a Christmas card competition,’ aimed at school children aged between five and eleven.

Seven-year-old Caleb Ewart from Co. Londonderry, Northern Ireland, scooped first prize with his bold and colourful design of a dog and a cat, complete with festive holly. A pupil at Hezlett Primary School in Castlerock, Caleb won a selection of goodies from Crayola and children’s books for his class, courtesy of Hodder. His winning design will be made into a Christmas card for his school.

Second prize was awarded to six-year-old Carla Johnson from Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire, while third prize went to Elizabeth Nuttall, aged ten, from Nottingham.

Aimed at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 pupils, the Christmas card competition encouraged young people to think about what pets need to keep them healthy; especially at Christmas, and to encourage further understanding of why it’s important not to give a pet as a present.

‘The competition provided the ideal opportunity for pupils to look at the needs and care of pets. It also allowed both charities to work together to highlight the importance of responsible pet ownership,’ explained Janet Wickens, Head of Fundraising and Communications at Cats Protection. ‘We were delighted with the number and standard of entries and felt the bright and colourful designs really captured the joys of owning a pet.’
